Prefontaine Foundation Scholarship Program

In 2005, the Prefontaine Foundation Board established a scholarship program to benefit Coos County high school students who have participated in cross country and/or track and field programs at their respective schools.

To qualify for scholarship consideration, the student must be a high school senior, have earned at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average, have been a resident of Coos County since at least September 1 of the previous year, have participated in either cross country or track and field and have demonstrated exceptional dedication to their sport.

Each candidate is asked to provide an official transcript and an activities chart showing their involvement in school/family/community activities, volunteer service, and work for pay. Finally, the student is asked to write a 250-400 word essay on what one of three Steve Prefontaine quotes means to them:

  1. “Some people create with words or with music or with a brush and paints. I like to make something beautiful when I run.”
  2. “A lot of people run a race to see who is the fastest. I run to see who has the most guts.”
  3. “To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift.”

The Prefontaine Foundation Board meets in the spring to review applications and to decide who will be the recipient of our $2,000 scholarships.

Best wishes to each recipient for success as they pursue a college degree and for meaningful careers after graduation.

Steve Prefontaine was undoubtedly one of the gutsiest and most determined runners of all time. Most collegiate and professional runners have guts and determination, they give their all, and do their best. But Steve Prefontaine stuck out; he wasn’t just any great runner, he was especially gutsy. He once said, “A lot of people run […]

Some individuals are born with the natural ability to excel in sports. Without a doubt, one of these exceptional athletes was Steve “Pre” Prefontaine. Prefontaine was often characterized by his uncommon grit, dedication, light heartedness, and his ability to seemingly overcome any obstacle or challenge that came his way. The Legacy of Steve Prefontaine I’ve grown up in Coos Bay/North Bend all my life.
