Jason Padgett
Good evening. My name is Chad Scriven and up until a few months ago I was the head track and field coach for Marshfield High School.
I have coached for a total of 18 years, and I have learned a great deal in that time. One of the most surprising lessons I’ve learned is that many people are talented but don’t work hard, and an equally large number of people work hard despite having few natural gifts in that area. It is incredibly rare to find someone with natural talents who is still willing to work hard to maximize the areas nature blesses them in.
Jason is a natural sprinter. As the coach from the opposing team, he was easy to notice, and while I’ve enjoyed knowing him in passing, and seeing him develop as an athlete and a young man, I didn’t enjoy knowing that my team would have to contend with him for another three years after seeing him run as a freshman.
In our classification, and in our area, Jason could have relied on his talent alone and may have achieved nearly the same levels of success and would have still garnered the same amount of attention. Jason’s work ethic, combined with his talent, is why he is receiving this award.
In four years, Jason won multiple individual and relay team championships at the district level. He is a two-time state champion in the 4x100m relay, a two-time state champion in the 100m and a two-time state champion and current state record holder in the 200m at 21.5 second.
A testament to Jason as a person is his election to be a team captain by his coaches and teammates for two years. Jake Smith, a North Bend coach, describes Jason as a great athlete, but a better person who always focused on his teammates and making the team better.
Jason continues his track and field career at Lane Community College where he continues to grow as an athlete and as a young man.
Jason’s combination of hard work and talent embodies the spirit of Steve Prefontaine who said, “To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift.”
On behalf of the Prefontaine Memorial Committee, it is my honor to present this award to Jason Padgett.
